Now that you’ve signed up for Workleap Onboarding, we’re going to create a general onboarding template for your organization. This will provide you with a solid, consistent foundation for all future onboardings.

This kick-start guide will walk you through the basic steps to get your first template up and running. Before you begin, we recommend that you read through the Basic concepts article so that you understand all the building blocks in Workleap Onboarding.

The basic of template creation is as follows:

Create your first template

For this kick-start guide, we’re going to create a general onboarding template for your company.

Click on Templates in the left menu.

Click on the New button at the top right. Then choose Use our pre-built templates in the options.

Then select the Employee onboarding template and press Use 1 template.

The Employee onboarding template includes over 50 curated activities that are applicable to the majority of organizations. It's a great way to get you started with the best onboarding practices in mind, ensuring you don't overlook anything important.

The template will open as a calendar view. Now it’s time to make this template your own!

Note: If you’d rather start a template from scratch, choose Skip for now instead. If you have a specific scenario in mind, such as a new manager onboarding, you can use another template as a starting point!

Set template details

On the top of a Template page, you can update important information, such as the name of the template, and any editors that should help you build the template. Click on the wheel for the name and on Share for the editors.

Add and change activities

The Employee onboarding template already has some activities added that you want to customize. Click on an activity to view or edit the activity.

If one of these activities doesn’t fit with your template, you can easily remove it by pressing Delete.

Set up activities with start and due dates, checklists, and detailed intros. You can even attach or link resources to your activities.

Make sure you assign activities to the newcomer or any other role. Later, when you create a plan for a newcomer from this template, it will help send reminder messages to the right person at the right time.

You can see more information about activities in the following articles:

Preview your template

Once you’ve set up your activities, it’s time to look over your template from the perspective of your newcomer or other teammates.

In the top right of the Template page, click the Preview button to see a timeline of your activities.

The preview shows what the activity list will look like on an assignees' Home page. At the top of the preview, you have the option to select which assignee’s activities you want to preview.

To close the preview, press the Close button at the top right to return to the template builder.

Assign a newcomer

Once your template is organized, the next step is to assign the template to a newcomer. Use the Assign button at the top right to use this template.

Now all you have to do is enter the newcomer information, choose a start date and send an invitation message.

For more information on plans for newcomers, see our article Plans overview.
